We use A Compassionate Approach to Animal Care at Longneck Manor
At Longneck Manor, an AZA-accredited conservation destination in Fredericksburg, Texas, our mission extends beyond eco-tourism and wildlife conservation—we strive to create an environment where animals under human care can thrive physically, emotionally, and behaviorally. One of the core philosophies that guide our care practices is the concept of free will, allowing our giraffes, rhinos, and even our resident sloth to make choices that lead to positive and enriching experiences.
What is a Free Will Approach to Animal Care?
In traditional animal care settings, training and interactions are often based on structured schedules and expectations. While routine is important, at Longneck Manor, we prioritize giving animals agency in their daily activities. A free will approach means that animals are encouraged and rewarded for their voluntary engagement in guest encounters as well as training required for daily and future wellness care. This fosters trust between the animals and their caretakers, creating a more enriching experience for both.
How We Apply Free Will at Longneck Manor
Giraffes: Training with Trust
Our giraffes are not only the tallest residents at Longneck Manor but also some of the most curious! Instead of coercion, we use positive reinforcement to encourage voluntary participation in training exercises. If a giraffe doesn’t feel like engaging in a training session one day, that’s okay—we respect their choice and try again another time. By allowing them to take the lead, we build trust that strengthens their relationship with their caretakers and ensures medical checkups are stress-free for the animals and the vets.
Rhinos: Respecting Boundaries
Rhinos may be large and powerful, but they are also intelligent and sensitive creatures. We offer them opportunities to engage in activities that stimulate their minds, such as puzzle feeders and scent-based enrichment. If a rhino chooses to interact with a new object or approach a trainer, it’s because they want to, not because they have to. This approach fosters confidence and a sense of control, which is key to their overall well-being.
Sloth: The Ultimate Free Will Animal
If there’s one animal that embodies the concept of free will, it’s our resident sloth! Sloths move at their own pace—literally and figuratively—so our care routine is entirely on their terms. We don’t like to wake them up for a training session or push them to interact if they’re not interested. Instead, we provide them with opportunities for movement, enrichment, and socialization, letting them decide how they’d like to spend their day.
Why Free Will Matters
Giving animals autonomy in their daily lives leads to numerous benefits, including reduced stress, improved mental engagement, and stronger bonds with their caretakers. By allowing them to make choices, we promote natural behaviors that are essential to their well-being. It also enhances the guest experience, and as one of the most unique places to stay in Texas, visitors to Longneck Manor witness authentic animal interactions, fostering a deeper appreciation for wildlife and conservation efforts.
At Longneck Manor, we believe that respecting animals’ choices is a fundamental aspect of responsible care. Whether it’s a giraffe deciding when to train, a rhino choosing to explore a new scent, or a sloth determining the perfect nap spot, we celebrate the individuality of every species. Through this approach, we not only care for animals—we empower them.
